Irish language class for children
The Center offers an Irish Language class for young children every Saturday morning at 11:00am. The course is taught by an accredited Irish language teacher from the Institute of Irish-American Studies at Lehman College. These classes are of particular interest to families who may be planning on relocating to Ireland or to parents who would like their children to have a basic grasp of the the Irish language because of its importance in terms of the Irish culture.
Celtic Summer Camp
We introduced the Celtic Summer Camp to our program of events two years ago. The week long camp gives children a taste of all the various aspects of Irish culture in both an educational and recreational way. The summer camp is coordinated by a qualified National School Teacher who is also a gifted musician, playing on various tours with Riverdance. The camp finished with a 30 minute play about the Irish mythological character, Cúchulainn, bringing pride to both the children and their families. Please call the center if you want to register your child for the 2010 Celtic Summer Camp - spaces are limited.
GAA and other Irish Organizations
We work closely with the GAA and other Irish organizations in New York to ensure we are all striving collectively towards a common goal (cúl) to preserve and promote all aspects of Irish culture. We are delighted to facilitate GAA and other club meetings here at the Aisling Center in keeping with the ethos of a community center.
While Mem'ry Brings Us Back Again - Book and DVD
Both the book “While Mem'ry Brings Us Back Again” & documentary DVD ensure that this particular era of emigration (1920 - 1960) has secured its place in history. The book and Documentary DVD include beautiful old photographs and archival footage which will evoke fond memories for many people who immigrated to America during that particular era. While the participants spoke mostly of their new life in America, the pattern of their social life was directly identifiable with their strong sense of pride in their Irish culture. For the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Irish born emigrants, it will provide a meaningful insight into the emotional journey experienced by their forefathers.
