INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS – SUMMER 2010

JOBs

1) NEW YORK AREA

We highly recommend that you start your research for both a job and accommodation as soon as possible as this year in particular the job market here is quite slow and overcrowded. Make sure you register with SEVIS/CIEE within the required time period; some students did not do this last year and had to leave the U.S. immediately because they did not adhere to the conditions of the J1 visa.

It is also realistic that you will be waiting up to six weeks before receiving your social security number although you should have documentation from SEVIS stating that employer's can hire you and that your S.S. # will be issued soon. You will also receive a letter from the S.S. office that your application for S.S. # is in progress.

JOBS IN NEW JERSEY

For those of you who may wish to travel to New Jersey Shore (Sea Side Resorts) where more jobs may be available in the Hotel and Entertainment industry. Look up website www.the-wildwoods.com for information on employment, accommodation, general information, etc.

Cozy Inn Motel, 120 East Burke Ave., Wildwood, New Jersey - Phone # 1609 729 0102

Bill Callaghan:  Phone # 609 425 5059 or Fax # 609 522 3068

While he no longer employs people, he is happy to assist Irish students obtaining social security numbers, etc

Morey's Piers amusement park employs large numbers of Irish students. They generally pre-arrange hiring through USIT or BUNAC but also accept walk-ins.  Melissa Troiano is in charge of hiring.  She can be reached at (609) 729-3700 extension 125. Accommodation is also arranged for people working there.

It is advisable to try all the arcades and stores on the boardwalk as well as the hotels and motels throughout Wildwood, North Wildwood and Wildwood Crest.  Some students have been luckier with the smaller stores and guesthouses. Also check out list of hotels and motels at www.capemaytimes.com/hotels/wildwood-crest.htm

The New Jersey Department of Labor office in Wildwood seeks to fill many of the job vacancies occurring in the Jersey shore area over the summer.  They will provide job placement assistance to J-1 students through their “one-stop center”.  They just recently advised us that they look forward to seeing the Irish students.  They print out weekly lists of jobs available and can be reached on the internet at www.wnjpin.net. Mr. Michael C. Lazarchick is the manager there.  They will also help with obtaining your social security card (J-1 students) in the event that you have not obtained it before leaving NYC.   Mr. Lazarchick advised us that the receipt of the application for a social security card will be sufficient evidence for employers that you are eligible for employment. It takes about two weeks for the actual social security card to come through. It would be important to have an address where your mail can be received.

OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND

This is another popular resort with Irish students. Please refer to website www.oceancity.org or contact Bill Ferguson at the Irish Student Outreach Center at 410-210-6001 who will be very happy to assist with applying for your social security number and with getting work and accommodation.

WILDWOOD, NEW JERSEY

Cassie Golaszewski at the Overbrook Apartments in Wildwood has a number of apartments which she rents to Irish students over the summer.  Her phone # is 609 729 2775.  In the event she has no more rentals she can generally advise you where to look. You can expect to pay about $90-110 per week for accommodation.

Some of the hotels, motels, etc. provide accommodation for student employees – verify this when meeting with prospective employers.

It is important to get to Wildwood as soon as possible and start searching! Buses leave from the Port Authority bus terminal. Go to www.panynj.gov for a schedule of buses to/from Wildwood and other NJ destinations.

A WORD OF ADVICE:  The police in Wildwood are very strict in enforcing local ordinances. They have zero tolerance for rowdiness.  Please do not drink alcoholic beverages on the streets. Alcohol cannot be served to those less than 21 years of age.

Finally, if there is anything else we can help you with, please feel free to ask! We know it can be overwhelming at times, especially when you are away from your family and in an unfamiliar setting, so talk to us if you are having difficulties settling in.

Mind Yourself!
