The organization aims to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and the development of society. Foróige employs over 460 staff and involves some 5,500 volunteers in the creation and delivery of high quality services to young people through the operation of over 530 volunteer led clubs in Ireland and the USA, the Big Brother Big Sister mentoring program and almost 200 General Youth Services and Special Projects. About the Aisling Irish Community Centre
The Aisling Irish Community and Cultural Center (AICC) is a non-political, non-religious not for profit organization based in Yonkers, New York. The AICC engages with local community in the New York area with a focus on Irish diaspora and their families. We aim to meet community needs through a range of programs including cultural, educational and social service programs. Strongly support by local community, we receive funding from a variety of sources including government, corporate, philanthropic entities. We are a registered 501 c 3 organization.
Project Overview
This exciting innovative project builds on pilot projects in New York and Philadelphia between Foróige and local partners. It involves Foróige and The Aisling Centre, supported by local partners in implementing youth work models to involve young people of Irish descent, and adult volunteers, in youth work programs designed to:
1. Increase the young people’s attachment to Ireland as it now is, and to the Irish community in their home area
2. Support meaningful intergenerational contact in the Irish community abroad
3. Enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the development of society, including skills for life, work and community.
Key Responsibilities
• Organizational development: In consultation with local partners and Foróige, to identify needs and interests of Irish American young people and their friends. Develop youth work structures such as volunteer led clubs, in school programs, individual programs and online programs. Enable local volunteers in the community, schools and other settings, to lead Foróige in that area. Identify and adapt to local cultural norms as necessary.
• Program Training design and facilitation: Identifying needs, provision of training for volunteers and staff, including training for trainers in Foróige manualized programs such as Leadership, Citizenship (a community impact program) and Be Healthy Be Happy. Enable adult volunteers and others to develop other programs with young people to meet their own identified needs.
• Volunteer recruitment and leadership: recruitment and support of the required number of adults as volunteers following Foróige and local law/procedures for this.
• Problem solving – Provision of consultancy and facilitation skills to support adult volunteers, partner organizations and staff to problem solve in relation to their Foróige roles and to enable them to support young people to do the same.
• Teamwork and collaboration: Linking with internal and external partners in the local site to meet the objectives of the program. These may include Foróige clubs and projects and Irish community organizations such as the GAA, Irish cultural centers, Irish dance groups, pastoral support services and others non-politically partisan groups.
• Program quality: Keep the program consistent with Foróige’s purpose and philosophy.
• Administration and reporting: including budgeting, recording, booking venues, and reporting in timeframes, methods and standards required.
• Links to Ireland: Where feasible to involve the local Foróige groups to develop links such as twinning with Ireland based Foróige groups. To promote possibility of visits by groups to Ireland to meet other young people and learn about the country.
• Safety: Following relevant Foróige policies and procedures and local law and practice in all areas of work including volunteer selection and Child safeguarding and protection.
• Any such other relevant duties as the Board of the Aisling center and/or the Executive Director shall deem necessary for the effective implementation of the program with agreement of Foroige.
Professional Qualifications and Experience
(E) = Essential, (D) = Desirable
● Education to Degree standard in level 8 or above in a relevant subject (E)
● Paid or voluntary experience in program and training design and facilitation (E)
● New York Driver’s License (D)
Person Specification (all Essential requirements)
● Understanding of and lived familiarity with the local culture in the relevant site and with modern Ireland
● Ability to recruit, support and retain suitable adult volunteers
● Good interpersonal skills, including ability to liaise with a wide range of contacts and build and maintain effective working relationships
● Excellent standards of accuracy and attention to detail
● Understanding of youth work methodologies
● Commitment to Foróige, and to operating in keeping with its purpose, philosophy and values
● Ability to be proactive, use own initiative and work within a pressurized environment
● Positive and flexible approach to working as part of a team
● Good written communications skills, including ability to draft summary information and correspondence, good report writing skills.
● Ability to follow organizational guidelines and processes.
● Good computer skills, including Word, Excel, Internet, PowerPoint and Social Media
Requirements of all Foróige staff (all Essential requirements)
● Commitment to the purpose of Foróige, and to the Aisling Center, and to work within the values, policies and procedures of the organizations
● To act consistently in a professional manner at all times
● To participate in regular supervision with your line manager
● Flexibility in relation to hours of work to meet the needs of the work. Work during evenings and some weekends is likely to be required.
● Identify training needs with your line manager and participate in training opportunities appropriate to the role
● To undertake other duties as may be requested by the Executive Director of the Aisling Center, or their appointee from time to time
