Foróige Youth Group
Foróige is the leading youth organization in Ireland and is active here in New York through the Aisling Center.
The mission of Foróige is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their development and in the development of society. The Aisling Center’s Foróige program began in June 2018 and is active in both Yonkers and Rockland.
Foroige was the proud recipient of the Irish Echo Community Champions Award for 2021!
What are Foroige clubs?
Foróige Clubs are a safe, enjoyable place for young people to hang out, meet new friends, get involved in activities, and have a voice.
Foróige clubs are split based on age, with junior clubs for youths ages 10-12 and senior clubs for youths ages 13-18. Clubs general meet one night a week – Club Night – for 1 ½ – 2 hours. The club night begins with a formal meeting, led by the club committee to make decisions about the club. Then members decide if they want to work on a project based on Foróige’s education programs or just hang out with their friends, enjoying games or activities.
What makes Foroige different?
Foróige is different from other youth clubs in that it is run by the young people themselves. This allows them to believe in themselves, make decisions and practice leadership skills.
Foróige has been very successful in our community, with both our Rockland and Yonkers clubs at full capacity. There is currently a waiting list in place for new members. We find that many of our members are those who aren’t necessarily involved in the GAA, Irish music and Irish Dance. Our Foróige Club offers an alternative for them to connect with their Irish heritage while also learning great skills.
What have Foroige Clubs done in the past?
Our Foróige members have enjoyed a variety of educational and leadership opportunities.
Our clubs have welcomed many guest speakers, including Denis Mulcahy, founder of Project Children. Our Youth members have worked with the Aisling Irish Volunteers for the Homeless by collecting socks, blankets, and hygiene products for those in need on the streets of NYC. Some even donated baked goods during the pandemic! Foróige members have also had the wonderful opportunity to meet Irish government officials. In 2019, the Irish Mission to the United Nations invited our group to attend the commemoration of the Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and experience a day in the life on an Irish diplomat. By actively participating in such activities, our youth are learning the importance of community development and effective leadership.
How can you get involved?
We are always looking for volunteers!
Our Rockland and Yonkers youth clubs are at full capacity and there is currently a waiting list for new members. However, we are still looking for volunteer leaders. Our clubs are run by the young people themselves, and the support of our adult volunteers makes that possible. Volunteer leaders must be 18 years old, available 1 ½ hours each week, and willing to undergo training. If you’re interested, please email email@example.com.
